Title: math help!
Post by: joyjang on September 12, 2012, 11:57:01 PM
About two centuries ago, Benjamin Franklin showed that 1 tsp of oil would cover about 0.5 acre of still water. If 1.0 x 10^4 m^2 = 2.47 acres, and there are about 5 cm3 in a tablespoon, what is the thickness of the layer of oil?

1.0 x 10^4 m^2 = 2.47 acres
0.5 acreis the area covered on the surface  of the one tablespoon oil .
Volume = 5cm^3
Volume = area X thickness(height) =5 cm^3 = 5 x10^-6 m^3 = 0.5 acre x 1.0 x 10^4 m^2/ 2.47 acres       x thickness of the oil layer.
thickness of the oil layer =   5 x10^-6 m^3x 2.47 acres /0.5 acre x 1.0 x 10^4 m^2
