Title: Equilibrium
Post by: nike on April 04, 2013, 03:48:22 AM
Hi, guys, can anybody help me to solve the following tasks:

1. CO(g)+O2(g) :rarrow:CH3OH(l)              ΔH=-128kJ
At what temperature this system reach equilibrium? Use the following standard entropy values
                         substance             S° J/Kxmol
                         CO(g)                    197.7
                         O2(g)                    130.7
                         CH3OH(l)               239.7
2. Write the equilibrium constant expression for the reaction
     4HCl(g)+O2(g) ::equil::2H2O(g)+2Cl2(g)    ΔH<0

Predict the direction of the shift of equilibrium position in response to each of the following  changes in conditions:
                 the temperature is increased;
                 the pressure is decreased;
                 a catalyst is added;
                 oxygen is added.
Thank you beforehand, guys.

For the first question -
At equilibrium -delta G=0
delta G = delta H - T   deltaS
T =delta H/delta S
Second question -
   the temperature is increased-it will go in the direction of endothermic reaction -left
the pressure is decreased = it will go in the direction of the high pressure =left
a catalyst has no effect on the equilibrium
oxygen is added- it will go in the direction so that this extra amount of Oxygen is used.
