A nitrogen atom has 7 protons, and its most common isotope has 7 neutrons. A radioactive isotope of nitrogen has 9 neutrons. What is the atomic number and what is the mass number of this radioactive nitrogen? Show all of your work for full credit
So I know this is basic chemistry but I am horrible at this subject and really need help on this question, if anyone can also show me how they got that it would be very helpful so that i can understand how you got the answer. Thank you to all those that help.
Remember atomic number is the number of protons and if you change the symbol of atom(different elements) then atomic number is going to be different.Isotopes are the atoms of the same element with different number of protons. In this case atoms are
14N7 and 16N7
No of protons in 14N7 7 which is the atomic number also.
Mass number is sum of protons and neutrons - 7+7 =14
16N7
No of protons in 14N7 7 which is the atomic number also.
mass number = protons + neutrons = 7+9=16
